How to Study the Bible: NT Survey (Pt3)

July 11, 2012
Romans through 2Thessalonians

We continue to walk through the New Testament, surveying each book in its context. This week we looked at the Church Epistles and the ended with a brief overview of their structure as an organized whole (i.e., they were not just randomly placed in the order we seem them in).

I this study we focus on the Book of Acts. We did a review of the Gospels to help us understand the historical and dispensational context of Acts, and then walked through the Book of Acts itself, seeing the transition from Israel to the Church--from the Jews to the Gentiles.

And we had time to do an overview of the foundational Book of Romans. Next lesson we pick up the survey where we left off by looking a 1Corinthians, a book full of what not to do in the local church.

We started our survey of the New Testament books by looking at some elements of the structure of the New Testament, and then we dove right into the Gospels. Why do we have three "synoptic" Gospels and then John? Which was written first? Does it matter? What can we learn from all that.

Additionally, we had a couple good questions at the beginning of the study. For example: Where in the Bible can we find the concept of a "calling" (i.e., a calling to be a pastor or missionary)?

Two books mentioned in this study:

Tonight we finished up our survey of the Old Testament by looking at the Minor Prophets. Most of the prophets preached during the time of apostasy in Israel that we see in 2Kings, right before God took His people off the land in judgment. There are a lot of parallels in the Minor Prophets to the situation we see today in Christendom, right before God takes us off the land... in the rapture.

This is the third part of our mid-week Bible study on the Old Testament. We are doing a quick overview and survey of each book in the Old Testament, seeing how they all fit together historically and contextually (within the over-arching theme of the Bible: the Kingdom).

How to Study the Bible: OT Survey (Pt2)

Continuing our walk through the books of the Old Testament, this Wednesday night we spent out time in the history books from Joshua to Esther. There is a lot of history... a lot of doctrine that teaches of future events... and a lot of practical application for us today!

We also had a couple of very good questions at the start of the Bible study, and those are also included in the mp3 audio file.

How to Study the Bible: OT Survey (Pt1)

We started a new section in our mid-week series on How to Study the Bible: Old Testament Survey. We begin the study by looking at God's hand in the structure of the Bible itself, especially looking at the relationship between the Old and New Testaments.

And then we started our walk through the Old Testament books by doing a quick overview of each of the five Books of Moses: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Duerteronomy.

How To Study The Bible - Things To Come (Pt3)

Wednesday - May 16, 2012

We finished up our survey of things to come tonight in our mid-week Bible study. We took a look at the following events:

  1. The Second Coming of Christ
  2. The Millennial (Messianic) Kingdom
  3. The Great White Throne Judgment
  4. The New Creation
  5. Eternity Future

And then we did a quick overview of the Book of Revelation, which is a history book that records the future history of all these things to come. Pretty neat!
